Resources in KISD
-
Whether textbooks, library books, or digital educational applications, Keller ISD is dedicated to providing exceptional, age-appropriate resources for all students.
Instructional resources are selected to meet the requirements of Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and the needs of the District's adopted curriculum. Additionally, library books are chosen based on the support they can provide to the curriculum, personal interests of students, and recommendations by employees, parents, and students.

In the summer of 2021, Keller ISD staff began reviewing the District's digital resources to ensure they were age-appropriate for students. In August, the District communicated with families the need to remove three resources from KCloud in order to conduct a review. KISD staff spent time during the first nine-week grading period categorizing books in SORA by grade levels, evaluating BrainPOP and NewsELA. In October, the District communicated updated information. SORA was placed back on KCloud for students to access books. Because NewsELA does not have a filter option, teachers will continue to determine appropriate material for instruction and will place the links to text sets for students to read. Keller ISD evaluated the usage of BrainPOP, along with the quoted renewal price. Due to the low usage throughout the District and the cost for renewal, KISD made the decision to not renew its subscription to BrainPOP.The following communications were shared with families in regards to this review process:

In October 2021, a book was brought to Keller ISD's attention that contained inappropriate images. Administrators identified that there was one copy of the book in question that had been available at a single high school library. There had been no indication from the book's description that it contained graphic illustrations; however, once the school became aware of the images, the book was immediately removed from circulation out of an abundance of caution, pending an investigation to determine how the book was selected and made available to students. The District notified all KISD families and employees about the incident and followed up two days later with information about Keller ISD's Book Review process and planned changes to the District's processes:Families/Staff Email: Book Review Process from the Keller ISD Superintendent | October 29, 2021
