Advocate for KISD Schools
-
Help us save Keller ISD as our legislature fails to get crucial funding to our schools!
Throughout 2023, our representatives had five legislative sessions to use some of the state's record budget surplus to fully fund public schools, but failed to agree on legislation to do so. Now, public school districts across Texas are facing uncertainty as costs continue to rise and school funding from the state remains stagnant.
Keller ISD Is facing a number of challenges outside of our control, including:
- Record inflation: the price of everything from utilities to insurance to fuel has increased significantly
- Unfunded mandates: safety, technology, special education, and teacher raises are all items that have been mandated by the state, which schools must cover, but for which the state has not provided adequate funding
- Flattening of enrollment: enrollment growth has stagnated nation-wide post-COVID
- Recapture: a program that sends KISD property tax dollars back to the state for redistribution to other districts
- Insufficient and outdated funding formula: the state school funding formula has not been updated since 2019
We need our representatives to FULLY FUND Texas public schools NOW! We are asking for our legislators to:INCREASE THE BASIC ALLOTMENT
(the amount districts receive each year per student)
to at least $7,200 to account for inflationPROVIDE ONGOING FUNDING FOR TEACHER RAISES
(not one-time stipends that leave the burden of future raises on school districts)REFORM THE RECAPTURE PROGRAM
that now has a surplus of $2.5 billion in funds taken from school districts
