Determining a Need for Acceleration: Referring a Student for Assessment

Acceleration options are available for all students, not only those identified as Gifted & Talented under Keller ISD qualifications. Teachers and parents may refer a student to the campus counselor for assessment if they feel the student has enough knowledge of the content and ability to demonstrate mastery of the content of the course through which they would like to accelerate.
The Credit by Exam is a Texas-approved assessment that measures mastery of the content based on the TEKS. The CBE is not a test of cognitive abilities or a student's ability to learn--it is a content exam. It is key that teachers, parents, and administrators understand that gifted students who learn and process new information quickly and differently may not necessarily be successful on the content-based exam.
