Graduate's Artwork Featured in AP Art and Design Exhibit

Keller ISD is excited to announce that Keller High School graduate Baylie Simon has been featured in the 2023 AP Art and Design Exhibit.

This year’s AP Art and Design Digital Exhibit features 46 high school artists from four countries selected from more than 74,000 students who submitted portfolios to the 2023 AP Art and Design Exam. The featured students represent outstanding examples from the Sustained Investigation and Selected Works portfolio components. The exhibit is designed not only to showcase the rigor and excellence of the AP Art and Design portfolio, but also as an exemplary teaching tool shared with AP Art and Design students worldwide.

Simon, a 2023 KHS graduate, has her drawing “Trapped” featured in this year’s exhibit. Drawn with pastels on a 24-by-20-inch medium, the exhibit curator notes that she used “contrasting colors, patterns, and expressive pose” to create a “symbolic portrait of interior emotional space.

“I am incredibly proud of Baylie,” said Keller High School Principal Lisa Simmons. “Her growth as a student and her artistic abilities certainly set her apart, and I am grateful for [Art Teacher Craig] Gould and his ability to provide a space where students are free to create and collaborate.”

Simmons shared how important visual arts programs are to the academic environment, allowing students to explore their passion for learning.

“From a leadership standpoint, ensuring our arts programs are funded and providing opportunities for students to showcase their work on campus and in our community is critical to continued success,” Simmons said.

Student participation in AP Art and Design requires that each student’s work is informed and guided by observation, research, experimentation, discussion, critical analysis, and reflection, relating individual practices to the art world. Students document their artistic ideas and practices to demonstrate conceptual and technical development to create a portfolio of work.
