Fine Arts Programs

  • BAND
    The band program begins at the intermediate school level in the sixth grade and students have the opportunity to continue through the twelfth grade. Beginning classes focus on the development of correct musical and performance skills. In most cases, students are divided in "like-instrument" classes. In addition to further development of their basic fundamental skills, these bands offer a variety of performance opportunities including concerts, pep rallies, football games and UIL contests. Students are encouraged to participate in individual events such as Solo & Ensemble Contest All-Region, Area, and State Auditions.

    CHOIR
    Choir begins in the sixth grade. These classes focus on establishing and developing basic musical and performance skills building from the general music classes at the elementary level. These choirs offer a variety of performance opportunities including concerts, community events, and U.I.L. contests. Students are also encouraged to participate in individual events such as Solo & Ensemble Contest and All-Region Choir auditions. Participation at the high school level includes solo/ensemble, TMEA auditions, Show Choir, and U.I.L. concert and sight-reading competitions.

    ORCHESTRA
    Orchestra is offered as an after school program through the KISD String Academy. Instruction is available for students in grades 2-12, and includes beginning through advanced sessions. Beginning in the fall of 2017, KISD began offering orchestra at Fossil Ridge and Keller High School, as well as feeder pattern campuses, Bear Creek Intermediate, Keller Middle, and Vista Ridge Middle Schools.

    DANCE
    Dance Classes are coordinated by the fine arts office, and Drill Team and After-School Dance Programs are coordinated by the athletics office. Dance is offered at the high school level as a fine arts credit. This course is the study of dance as an art form. Students will experience various styles of dance including jazz, modern, ballet, hip hop, tap and drill team. There are various levels of dance offered, ranging from beginner to advanced. Students will have the opportunity to create, choreograph and perform these styles of dance. They will also examine the history and vocabulary of each style of dance through extensive practice and training.

    THEATRE
    Theatre begins at the sixth grade on all intermediate campuses. Middle School theatre arts provide students with instruction in class production, a musical, and a one-act play competition. Theatre classes consist of introduction to acting through monologues and scene work. The High School theatre arts students explore methods of artistic expression, the personnel and organization of the theatre, and the structure of the written play script and technical theatre. Through performance and production, students build on their speaking, writing, and reading skills through the study of acting, directing, and play analysis.

    ART
    Formal art instruction is offered at all secondary campuses in Keller ISD. Students are introduced to the elements of art and continue through basic design, methods and materials. Beginning at the seventh grade level student may select art as an elective. By challenging their imaginations with new techniques and materials, the students refine their skills by expressing their thoughts and ideas creatively. At the high school level students may enroll in College level Advanced Placement courses. All students are given the opportunity to participate in the annual district-wide art competition and show.

    UIL ACADEMICS
    The University Interscholastic League offers a wide variety of academic contests for high school students, encompassing many elements of required high school coursework. These contests build upon the academic skills developed in the classroom and offer students an opportunity to stretch their talents above and beyond those requirements. It offers more than any other UIL division in terms of activities, with 22 high school and 18 elementary, intermediate, and middle school contests. More than a half million students participate in UIL academic contests.

    SPEECH AND DEBATE
    High school students have many opportunities to sharpen their public speaking skills through a variety of speech offerings. From taking a basic speech communications course, which teaches the role of communications in our daily lives, to participation on one of the nationally competitive high school debate teams, there is something for every level of interest. Students engage in the art and study of argumentative discourse used in public speaking, debate, and courts of law. For the purposes of secondary school programs, Forensics also includes those aspects of theatrical performance events which are part of the competitive tournament circuit (duet acting, duo interpretation, dramatic, humorous, prose, and poetry interpretation).

    ELEMENTARY

    General music instruction begins in kindergarten as all elementary children work with certified music specialists through the fifth grade. Participation in the district elementary honor choir is offered to fourth graders. Students are engaged in a variety of activities where they listen to music of the highest quality and sing, move, and perform a rich mixture of folk, seasonal, and patriotic music. Most of the teachers use Kodaly and Orff techniques. Most elementary schools have an after school honors choir.

    Theatre instruction is offered at many elementary campuses throughout the district. Here, students develop concepts about self, human relationships, and the environment, using elements of drama and conventions of theatre. Students learn creative expression through performance, the history and cultural relevance of theatre in our society, and the ability to critically evaluate themselves as well as their peers. Students also learn and utilize soft skills such as the value of a firm handshake, appropriate eye contact, and the ability to carry on a conversation with adults and peers.
