STEAM
STEAM is an acronym that stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. STEAM at Keller-Harvel is a process, not a curriculum. Lesson planning will focus on the process of learning over the product of learning. Instead of teaching through solely rote memory, at KHES we teach students to think critically to solve a problem. KHES teachers will encourage authentic learning through complex projects that are connected to the real world, encourage student engagement at all levels, and integrate subjects for deeper connections and more relevant learning opportunities. This transformation is preparing our students for a future world in which the next technology is not even invented yet!
We will continue providing exceptional learning experiences for your child, but with an approach that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking. Over the past few years, we have been headed down this path with a variety of students experiences. We have successfully implemented schoolwide STEAM days for students to explore design and engineering. Students have been exposed to coding in classrooms and through the library. With the help of generous parent donations, we were able to create a MakerSpace where students have been creating projects and solving problems while working in collaborative groups. The Outdoor Learning Center and music garden have provided KHES students opportunities to experience real world, hands-on projects. Teachers have been incorporating a variety of skills to create lessons and opportunities for students to give back through community service projects. Project-Based Learning and Engaged Learning Model lessons have promoted students to take charge of their own learning to solve a particular issue.
